For unordered lists, LaTeX provides the itemize environment and for ordered lists there is the enumerate environment.

The following code examples show how to use the most common types of lists you're going to use in your document. As I've mentioned above, unordered lists use the itemize environment and works without any additonal packages:. Sometimes you also have to list things, which have some kind of sub-category.

For this reason, LaTeX allows you to nest list environments and it will fix the indentation and numbering accordingly. Sometimes it's necessary to change the numbering scheme of a list, e. You can easily modify the output of the list. If you want to change the symbol for all items of the list, you should preferably use the enumitem environment, which I will explain using the example of ordered lists. Changing this environment is a little more tricky, because there's a lot more logic involved and the easiest solution is probably using the enumerate or enumitem environments.

I will use the enumerate environment for this purpose. So I will first add this environment to my preamble:. Ordered lists Changing this environment is a little more tricky, because there's a lot more logic involved and the easiest solution is probably using the enumerate or enumitem environments. Ordered lists can be created using the enumerate environment.

Lists can be nested and will be aligned and enumerated properly. Use the enumitem package to customize the symbols or enumeration.By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service. It only takes a minute to sign up.

Since Beamer redefines itemize, item, etc. I get the impression that you're not looking to go that far, but if that's not the case, let me know and I'll elaborate. There are at least three ways of accomplishing your goal from within your document, without mussing about with Beamer templates.

The advantage of this method is that the list is styled normally. It can be very hard to get the spacing right with multi-line items. The advantage of this method is that you have all of the flexibility of lists in non-Beamer LaTeX. The disadvantage is that you have to setup the bullet style and other visual elements manually or identify the right command for the template you're using. Note that if you leave the second argument empty, no bullet will be displayed and you'll save some horizontal space.

Put the following in your preamble:. Now, to use an itemized list with custom indentation, you can use the following environment.

Active 9 months ago.List are basic elements in a document, when used correctly they keep concepts organized and structured. This article explains how to create and modify numbered and unnumbered lists in L a T e X.

To create a unordered list you have to declare the itemize environment and then put the entries inside. Open an example in Overleaf. The unordered unnumbered lists are produced by the itemize environment. By default the individual entries are indicated with a black dot, so-called bullet.

The text in the entries may be of any length. The enumerate labels consists of sequential numbers, these numbers starts at 1 with every call to the enumerate environment. In L a T e X you can insert a list inside another list. The above lists may be included within one another, either mixed or of one type, to a depth of four levels. As many other L a T e X elements, unordered and ordered list styles can be personalized.

These numbers can be changed by redefining the commands that typeset the numbers of various list levels. For example:. It is possible to change the labels of any level, replace labelenumii for one of the listed below. There are some other styles, see the reference guide for a complete list. This can be changed:. These labels can be changed by redefining the commands that typeset them for various list levels.

To redefine the label use one of the next commands, depending on the level of list mark you intend to change:. All you have to do is pass the desired mark as a parameter inside brackets to the item line. Users of WYSIWYG word processors can sometimes be frustrated by the software's attempts to determine when they intend lists to begin and end. As a mark-up language, LaTeX gives more control over the structure and content of lists.

Lists often appear in documents, especially academic, as their purpose is often to present information in a clear and concise fashion. List structures in LaTeX are simply environments which essentially come in three types:. All three of these types of lists can have multiple paragraphs per item: just type the additional paragraphs in the normal way, with a blank line between each.

LaTeX/List Structures

So long as they are still contained within the enclosing environment, they will automatically be indented to follow underneath their item. LaTeX will happily allow you to insert a list environment into an existing one up to a depth of four, more levels are available using packages. Simply begin the appropriate environment at the desired point within the current list.

Latex will sort out the layout and any numbering for you. Sometimes you feel the need to better align the different list items. If you are using a KOMA-script class or package scrextendthe labeling environment is handy.

LaTeX Tutorial

It takes a mandatory argument that contains the longest of your labels. If you are on tight space limitations and only have short item descriptions, you may want to have the list inline. Please note that the example also shows how to change the font. If you want a horizontal list, package tasks can be handy. In combination with a package like exsheets, you can prepare exam papers for students. When dealing with lists containing just a few words per item, the standard lists often take up too much space.

Package enumitem provides you a simple interface to customize the appearance of lists. You can change the appearance of lists globally in the preamble, or just for single lists using the optional argument of the environment.

Have a look at the following example where the list on the right is more compact using noitemsep. The documentation of package enumitem goes into more detail with respect to what can be changed and how. You can even define your own lists. Environments like labeling and tasks can be changed differently, details can be found in the package documentation respectively. The easylist package allows you to create list using a more convenient syntax and with infinite nested levels.

It is also very customizable. The easylist environment will default to enumerations. The parameter Numbers determines the way that the numbers are displayed and the possible values are r or R for lower and upper case Roman numeralsl or L for lower and upper case lettersa for Arabic numbers, the defaultand z for Zapf's Dingbats. The Progressive parameter sets the distance from the left margin of all items in proportion to their level.

Now we change the default properties to print a custom itemize:. Spaces in Style parameters are important. Important note: easylist has some drawbacks.

First if you need to put an easylist inside an environment using the same control character as the one specified for easylist, you may get an error. To circumvent it, use the following commands provided by easylist:. Besides using easylist along with figures may cause some trouble to the layout and the indentation.

LaTeX lists do not have this problem.
